Two CPS schools to launch space experiments

Experiments conceived by fifth- and sixth-grade students in Cincinnati Public elementary schools will be tested when Spider eggs and yeast will launch into space aboard a Russian rocket. Students from Quebec Heights and the Cincinnati Gifted Academy won a national competition and will have their science experiments flown up to the International Space Station.

Mansfield Senior High taking part in STEM effort

Mansfield Senior is one of four high schools in Ohio chosen to participate in the STEM Equity Pipeline Project, designed to funnel women, minorities and other underrepresented groups into STEM fields.
 
EXCERPT:

Ben Williams of Columbus State Community College, the state project director, said the emphasis is primarily on women. "If you don't have the participation of females, you're missing out on 50 percent of your population. You're missing out on the opportunity for innovation and the economic impact that brings," he said.

Ohio One Year into Race to the Top

State officials are pretty pleased with the progress Ohio has made since winning $400 million dollars in the second round of the federal Race to the Top program. During the first year, Ohio has  accepted the Common Core Standards (a common curriculum to be shared by all Ohio schools), expanded the Woodrow Wilson Foundation STEM Teacher Fellowship Program and pursued additional efforts.

Schools promoting STEM education for girls

Programs at New Albany’s high school and middle school are preparing young women to take advantage of STEM opportunities. The high school’s club for female students interested in STEM fields helps girls who were often outnumbered by boys in their classes.

Kaitlyn Gliha, who is new to the district this year, said the STEM club has given her friends with similar interests. “It helps me interact with girls who are interested in what I’m doing,” Gliha said.

Creating “AgBioscience” STEM Schools in the Buckeye State

Centers of STEM education in Ohio include the Metro Early College High School, which opened in Columbus in 2007, and STEM schools in many otherregions like Dayton, Cincinnati, Akron and Cleveland. Now there is a push for the STEM network to open a school that is aimed at the state’s dynamic agricultural sector. Senator Chris Widener hopes to tackle this growing need.

How Battelle’s charity work focuses on education for tomorrow’s leaders

Battelle centers its charity work on education, seeking to transform the field by supporting a focus on STEM. They partnered with The Ohio State University in 2006 to establish the Metro Early College High School, Ohio’s first STEM platform school. Battelle wants to show people that these fields are not just for students pursuing a career in math or science and that the course work should be interdisciplinary, with a focus on a well-rounded education.

The STEM College at YSU

Youngstown State University's STEM College offers approximately 60 different majors as well as on-the-job training with internships. The dean of the STEM college, Dr. Martin Abraham, said that some students even get job offers before they graduate due to the high demand for employees in STEM careers.

New Partnership Between UC and Area High Schools Focuses on STEM Education in the 21st Century

The University of Cincinnati, in partnership with 14 Ohio school districts, is leading the way in STEM education with the Cincinnati Engineering Enhanced Mathematics and Science Program (CEEMS). This project will elevate the current STEM education system by enabling teachers to become math and science learning leaders. The recent CEEMS program launching celebration held on November 16, celebrated a $9.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation..

One-of-a-Kind Partnership at Rio Grande Makes Higher Education More Affordable

The University of Rio Grande& Rio Grande Community College are trying to keep tuition costs down through a unique partnership between a private university and a public community college. Since 1976, the university has offered most of its students the advantages of attending a private university for the price of a community college during their first two years.

NASA Hosts Winter STEM Challenge for Ohio Students

On December 14, students from Ohio schools in Erie, Huron, Seneca and Sandusky got to participate in a unique STEM learning opportunity.. NASA's Glenn Research Center, in partnership with Kalahari Resorts, hosted a Winter STEM Challenge in Sandusky, Ohio That drew 450 eighth grade students from 13 school districts to Sandusky to participate.

"The goal of the Winter STEM Challenge is to engage students in the fundamental aspects of science, technology, engineering and math that underpin not only space exploration but also day-to-day life," said Brian Willis, project lead for Glenn's Plum Brook Station education and outreach team.

Nonprofits in B.G. gain grants of nearly $24,000

The Northwest Ohio Center for Excellence in STEM Education was one of nine local nonprofit organizations that have been awarded almost $24,000 in grants from the Bowling Green Community Foundation. This foundation annually awards grants to groups in the Bowling Green area.

Metro school seeks independence

The Educational Council, a consortium of Franklin County districts that oversees the science- and math-focused school, voted unanimously yesterday to convert Metro from a countywide program into its own school. It would be open to students across central Ohio; students would no longer need permission from their districts to attend.
 
“Part of the mission of Metro is to educate students of all different districts in a common environment to demonstrate that this style of education that Metro brings is a style that works with all types of children,” said Eric Fingerhut, former state chancellor for higher education and Battelle’s Vice President of Educaiton and STEM Learning.

Institute donates $100,000 for STEM education

Battelle National Biodefense Institute (BNBI) is committed to getting middle schoolers interested in the sciences; it is offering a $100,000 gift to Frederick County Public Schools' STEM program.
 
This is BNBI’s third gift in two years. BNBI is a part of Battelle, the nonprofit, independent research and development organization based in Columbus, Ohio, which operates a lab at Fort Detrick. With this gift, BNBI will have given a total of $220,000 to FCPS for STEM education.

State Rankings for Ohio Schools Released Today

The Ohio Department of Education released a draft that ranks every school and school district in Ohio by its students scores on state standardized tests. The list includes traditional public schools as well as charter schools, joint vocational school districts and STEM schools.
